Consumer Action Network (CAN) ANNOUNCES PLUM NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR APPOINTED POSITIONS

The Consumer Action Network (CAN) is announcing that it will set up a plum nominating committee to seek qualified nominations for the various vacant positions to be filled by the next Presidential administration.

The Consumer Action Network (CAN) is the premier coalition of national organizations representing a wide continuum of deaf and hard of hearing people, including those who are deaf-blind and late-deafened. There are over 28 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States.

Newly elected CAN Chair Cheryl Heppner commented ³there are over 28 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States. President-elect George W. Bush has promised that his administration would reflect America and it is only appropriate and fair a proportionate number of appointees are deaf or hard of hearing.²

To date only a handful of deaf or hard of hearing individuals have ever been appointed by the President for various cabinet or sub-cabinet positions. The CAN hopes that this will change.

There are over 7,000 Federal civil service leadership and support positions in the legislative and executive branches of the Federal Government that may be subject to noncompetitive appointment; e.g., positions such as agency heads and their immediate subordinates, policy executives and advisors, and aides who report to these officials. Those positions are commonly referred to as plum positions.

Members of the CAN Nominating Committee will try to seek out the best and most qualified candidates and match them with appropriate positions, may it be transportation, health, education or legal related. The members of the CAN Nominating Committee are:
* Cheryl Heppner, CAN Chair and Association of Late Deafened Adults representative
* Claude Stout, Executive Director of TDI and former Chair of CAN
* Nancy Bloch, Executive Director of the National Association of the Deaf
* Kelby N, Brick, Esq., Attorney and CAN Legislative Consultant
* Victor Galloway, retired Department of Education official.
* David Nelson, former assistant office manager of Majority Whip
* Tony Coelho
* Kevin Nolan, former Councilman and ex-chair of the Oral Hearing-Impaired Section (now known as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Section) of the Alexander Graham Bell Association.

Interested applicants desiring nominations by the Consumer Action Network should submit an application to:
Kelby N. Brick, Esq.
CAN Legislative Consultant
Brick Law Office
14440 Cherry Lane Court
Suite 200
Laurel MD, 20707
Attn: PLUM Nominations

Applications can be sent via fax at (301) 483-4024 or email at
kelby@bricklawoffice.com
.
There is no deadline for applicants desiring nominations but the earlier the application is received, the better chance of an appointment.

Applications should include the representative's name, title, address and telephone number, a statement of positions or agencies interested, and a description of the applicant's qualifications. Even if an applicant is unsure of which agency or position would be best suited, an application should be submitted. The committee will try to match up applicants with potential agencies and positions.

Questions about the CAN or its nominating committee should be referred to Kelby Brick, Esq. at the above address.

Members of the CAN include ADARA, American Association of the Deaf-Blind (AADB), American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC), Association of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA), Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD), Deaf Seniors of America (DSA), Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA), Jewish Deaf Congress, National Association of the Deaf (NAD), National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA), National Catholic Office of the Deaf (NCOD), National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), TDI, Inc.
