For Immediate Release

Date: February 8, 2001
New Au.D. Programs Open Their Doors

West Lafayette, IN - Four universities have obtained approval for Au.D. degree programs. Utah State University in Logan, Utah, Rush University in Chicago, Illinois, Texas Technical University in Lubbock, Texas and the University of Texas at Dallas/Callier Center for Communication Disorders will provide post Bachelor's academic preparation for students who are seeking the Au.D. degree
through a 4-year curriculum. With the addition of these programs, there are now 17 colleges and universities, which will offer a
4-year Au.D. curriculum by 2002.

UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES NEW AU.D. PROGRAM

Utah State University is pleased to announce the offering of one of the first residential Au.D. programs in the western part of the
country beginning in the Fall of 2002. As one of the original 10 accredited speech and hearing programs in the country and
continuously accredited since 1947, USU has a significant history in the training of speech and hearing professionals. This
proud heritage of successfully educating and training audiologists will continue into the next century with the Doctor of
Audiology degree.

For further information, contact Kenneth M. Curtis, M.S., Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education, Utah State

RUSH UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES NEW AU.D. PROGRAM

Approvals have been received for a new Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program at Rush University, according to Dianne H.
Meyer, Ph.D., Chairperson of the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. Rush University is the academic
component of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.

"Our program is unique because it is based on the teacher-practitioner model," said Dr. Meyer. "In our academic medical center setting, the faculty are involved in clinical practice, teaching, and research. Students benefit from outstanding patient care experiences, and they learn from experienced faculty who reinforce the relationship between theory and practice."

The Rush Au.D. curriculum includes basic science and professional coursework as well as practicum, clerkships, internships, and an audiology residency. Students complete a project that may be databased or related to a clinical issue. The four-year program focuses on the development of the student's knowledge base, competencies, and independent professional skills.

Applications will be accepted for Fall, 2002. For more information, contact Dianne Meyer, Ph.D., Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Rush University at 312-942-6864.

TEXAS TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES NEW AU.D. PROGRAM

Texas Technical University in Lubbock TX opened its Au.D. program to its current students in January 2001. According to Dwayne Paschall, Ph.D., Director of Audiology, "100% of current students transitioned from the masters program to the Au.D. curriculum and will continue their studies." The school just developed the Center for Functional Brain Mapping and Cortical Studies, and the audiology students will be able to do studies there. A long-term care facility with a dementia wing is being built across the street. The relationship between the Au.D. program and patients will give audiologists training in geriatric practice.

A team approach with the departments of audiology, pediatrics and pharmacy will expose students to many problems during joint rounds and show future doctors how audiology fits into the whole health care picture. A teaching clinic will enhance their professional training. Dr. Paschall expects to be able to expand with the new facilities and program to include more students than in the past.
