March 12, 2001, Bethesda, Maryland - Elizabeth J. Wilson, Ph.D., of Riverside, Rhode Island, has been named executive director of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH), the nation's largest organization for people with hearing loss. She will officially assume the title and duties of her position on April 23, 2001. With a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a master's degree in the same field from Brown University, Beth Wilson is currently a senior principal engineer for Raytheon Company. In her 18 years at Raytheon, she has been responsible for various projects including radar, satellite, and sonar programs, and other research and development projects. In addition to her technical skills, she has experience in fiscal and personnel management as well as program development. She is a published author both in the scientific and hearing health fields and received the Raytheon Outstanding Author Award in 1993. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers honored her in 2000 with the Third Millennium Medal. Because of her own hearing loss, she brings a uniquely personal insight into, and experience with, hearing loss and its impact. She was the SHHH Rhode Island state coordinator since 1999 and has served as the Sargent (RI) Chapter president. She was chair of the Rhode Island Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Rhode Island Association of the Deaf honored her with the Golden Hand Award in 1990. She also received the Spirit of SHHH Award in June 2000 at the 15th International SHHH Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. The selection of Beth Wilson was made by the SHHH Board of Trustees on the recommendation of an eight-member SHHH national search committee that considered more than 50 applicants during this year. The committee was charged with the responsibility of conducting a national search for a new executive director to continue the tradition established by Rocky Stone when he founded the organization 21 years ago in 1979. The board of trustees is pleased to appoint a new executive director who will guide SHHH through its new strategic plan and into the future as SHHH strives to improve the quality of hard of hearing people's lives through education, advocacy, and self help. SHHH is a non-profit, educational organization for people with hearing loss, their relatives and friends, who are devoted to the welfare and interests of those who cannot hear well.
