The Moog Center for Deaf Education & Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association present, "Young Children with Cochlear Implants: Developing Speech and Auditory Skills" a workshop for Teachers and SLPs.

This workshop will take place on Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27, 2001 at The Moog Center for Deaf Education, 12300 South Forty Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63141. Phone: 314-692-7172, Fax 314.692.8544

Cochlear implants are providing sufficient access to sound to enable deaf children to learn to talk. This workshop will focus on helping deaf children (5 years and younger) capitalize on cochlear implants to develop good enough spoken language to use talking as their means of communicating.

The following topics will be discussed:

* candidacy and programming
* troubleshooting the implant
* working with infants, toddlers & preschoolers
* improving speech skills
* developing good listening skills

Enrollment is limited so that there will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions.

The following speakers will present:

Julia Biedenstein, Coordinator of Curriculum and Test Development, has been involved in a variety of research projects and has presented workshops throughout the United States. She co-authored SPICE (Speech Perception Instructional Curriculum and Evaluation) and the TASL (Teacher Assessment of Spoken Language).

Betsy Moog Brooks, Director of the Moog Family School Program, works with parents and children enrolled in our birth to three program. She has lectured and given workshops about educating young deaf children and the importance of early intervention.

Christine H. Gustus, Principal of the Moog School, has worked with deaf children in both clinical and school settings. As an Assistant Professor at Washington University, she taught "Teaching Speech to Deaf Children." She has lectured and presented workshops for teachers and SLPs at schools and centers around the United States.

Beth Holstad, our school audiologist, has worked with children with cochlear implants for over 10 years and has had experience programming more than 100 children. Her focus at the Moog Center, where over 70% of our children have cochlear implants, has been on testing and programming very young children.

Jean Sachar Moog, Director and Founder of the Moog Center for Deaf Education, is an internationally renowned leader in deaf education. She has lectured extensively throughout the US and Canada and conducted workshops and invited presentations in England, Italy, Japan and New Zealand.

Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association is approved by the Continuing Education Board of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to offer continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. This program is offered for 1.2 CEUs (Intermediate level, professional area.) ASHA approval of CE Provider status does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.

This workshop will be from 8:30 to 4:00 Thursday and Friday, April 26-27. For overnight accomodations, the Hilton-Frontenac Hotel has rooms available at a special rate ($95).
