Adult Aural Rehabilitation: A Challenge for the New Century |

The Hearing Rehabilitation Foundation (HRF) takes great pleasure in confirming that it will be hosting the First Biennial International Conference on Adult Aural Rehabilitation in Portland, Maine, from May 7 - 9, 2001. The aim of this exciting conference is to promote Aural Rehabilitation by bringing together people working in this complex area to present research findings, and to discuss approaches to best assist adults with hearing loss. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Mark Ross, who brings a wealth of experience from "both sides of the fence." Mark is a long-term advocate for Adult Aural Rehabilitation and, as both a consumer and a professional, he can offer unique insights and personal experiences. In addition, the conference will have four invited speakers with a wealth of experience in Aural Rehabilitation. · Arthur Boothroyd, formerly of City University of New York, will speak on his research into the use of Radio Frequency aids by older adults. · Roddie Cowie of Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland has worked extensively on the consequences of acquired profound hearing loss and will speak on this important topic. · Mary Beth Jennings has been a pioneer of Adult Aural Rehabilitation in Canada and will bring a wealth of personal experience and insight to her presentation. · Lars von der Lieth of Copenhagen University in Denmark, will speak on Aural Rehabilitation in the Nordic countries and will also tell of the course he heads to prepare Hearing Therapists to work with adults with acquired hearing loss. The HRF gratefully acknowledges the support of the following Conference Patrons - Advanced Bionics, Amplification Consultants, Cochlear Corp., Medel US, Oticon, Phonak, Phonic Ear, and Widex. The generous support of these companies has ensured that the conference has such a prestigious core of speakers. The conference will be further enhanced by over 35 presentations contributed by speakers from throughout the world. This is a unique opportunity to find out about worldwide trends and advances in Aural Rehabilitation, and to establish contacts with US and international practitioners. Presentations will focus on such diverse topics as: adjustment to acquired hearing loss, approaches to Hearing Aid Orientation, aural rehabilitation programs in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., Clear Speech, cochlear implants, gender issues, hearing aids, speech testing, and the special needs of older adults. In addition there will be an exhibit area where participants will be able to view a wide variety of aids, materials, etc., aimed at adults with acquired hearing losses.
