FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEC FOUNDATION OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES GRANTS Funding Supports Access to Science and Innovative Technologies Melville, N.Y., July 10, 2001 – NEC Foundation of America today announced eight separate grants totaling $300,000 to not-for-profit organizations focusing their services on education technology applications and/or emerging technologies for people with disabilities. "These organizations are making the scientific world more accessible and are breaking down the barriers to the use of innovative technologies," noted Hisashi Kaneko, president of NEC Foundation of America, in making the announcement. "NEC Foundation of America is proud of its 10-year legacy of providing support for pioneering projects in education and technology." Organizations receiving support from this recent round of grants from NEC Foundation of America include: Boston University Boston, MA $30,000 For general support for the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS), an intense six-week campus experience for seventy high school students and twenty high school teachers in which they work side by side to explore the creative world of mathematics in a context that encourages them to learn to think like mathematicians as they solve an assortment of problems in Number Theory. http://www.promys.org The Center for Excellence in Education McLean, VA $25,000 For the internationally acclaimed Research Science Institute (RSI), to include the designation of two outstanding young "Rickoids" at the Institute as "NEC Foundation of America Scholars." RSI is held each summer at MIT for students between their junior and senior year of high school who have demonstrated superior achievement in mathematics and the sciences, and who show potential to become leaders in science. http://www.cee.org The CPB-WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) Boston, MA $50,000 To conduct an outreach and education effort to streaming media companies, portals, and developers to demonstrate the ease and utility of access solutions, in order to proactively address a looming crisis for people with disabilities who are at risk of being excluded from information delivered via Web-based streaming media, the fastest growing media sector in the world. NCAM has developed models, technical solutions and tools that can equalize access to streaming media for people with disabilities. http://www.wgbh.org/ncam Institute for Innovative Blind Navigation (IIBN) Saginaw, MI $30,000 To conduct an information and education campaign to raise awareness among major rehabilitation and education institutions, and public policymakers, about emerging technologies for blind navigation, and to encourage the development of technologies that will improve the ability of blind individuals to navigate in the environment. Activities will include workshops, educational materials, a web site, listserves among researchers and inventors, presentations in professional and policymaking forums. http://isd.saginaw.k12.mi.us/~mobility/ Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute Washington, DC $30,000 For the development of an interactive web site to disseminate information to people with disabilities, family members, and professionals on a variety of issues specifically related to aging with a disability, including information on assistive technology, universal environmental design, best practices, program models, research and new resources and initiatives. http://www.kennedyinstitute.org Lighthouse International New York, NY $75,000 Toward a $5.3M, 3-year project to design and implement LighthouseLink, a unique, interactive online and offline resource that will enable people with visual impairments to use state-of-the-art Internet and adaptive technologies to access a unified, comprehensive database of information on vision impairments and rehabilitation, including referrals to local services and health care providers, cutting-edge research, clinical trials and innovations, educational offerings and relevant products. The site will also serve medical professionals and caregivers, policymakers, the business community and other critical audiences around the world. http://www.lighthouse.org National Public Radio Washington, DC $25,000 In support of the 10th anniversary year of Science Friday, the only radio talk show that is exclusively devoted to the coverage of science and technology. Each weekly program features relevant, timely topics, eminent guest scientists, policy makers, and experts who discuss a subject and respond to questions called in by listeners. The related interactive website extends the value of each program. http://www.npr.org & www.sciencefriday.com YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities (YAI/NIPD) New York, NY $35,000 For the development and national dissemination of two new CD-ROMs and companion user’s manuals as part of the Distance Learning Program that works to deliver cost-effective staff training that uses technology to help nonprofits attract new hires, improve employees’ skills, enhance measurable outcomes for programs, and increase quality services for clients with mental retardation/developmental disabilities. http://www.yai.org |
