ROCHESTER, N.Y.,Oct. 3, 2005—A Web site to showcase and promote the works
of deaf and hard-of-hearing artists in the United States is now
available through the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a
college of Rochester Institute of Technology. The site,
www.rit.edu/deafartists, is
designed for artists, teachers, scholars, and researchers. It offers
access to video interviews with various artists, artist biographies with
descriptions of their chosen mediums, and a forum section with
networking and dialogue opportunities.
“This site is a great resource for any artist or professional in the
field of deaf studies,” said Patricia Durr, associate professor in
NTID’s Cultural and Creative Studies department.
More than 40 professional artists are featured, as well as a group of
NTID/RIT students whose self-portraits, along with written or video
descriptions, are shown. Additionally, a dozen articles related to deaf
art and/or deaf artists are available. A resources section includes
links related to deaf art and to individual artists’ Web sites.
NTID is the first and largest technological college in the world for
deaf and hard-of-hearing students. One of eight colleges of RIT, NTID
offers educational programs and access and support services to the 1,100
deaf and hard-of-hearing students from around the world who study, live,
and socialize with 14,400 hearing students on RIT’s Rochester, N.Y.,
campus.
