COCHLEAR CORPORATION ANNOUNCES LATEST NUCLEUS 24 CONTOUR CLINICAL TRIAL RESULTS |

DENVER, CO. August 20, 2001 - Cochlear Corporation, the industry leader in cochlear implant technology, announced today six-month clinical trial results for the Nucleus 24 Contour. The award winning Nucleus® 24 Contour™ received FDA approval in October 2000. It is the world's first self-curling electrode array designed to place 22 channels of digital stimulation close to the hearing nerve fibers for improved hearing performance. The clinical trial results reported today set new standards of performance for the entire industry. Noted cochlear implant professionals made the following comments regarding the performance results reported for the Nucleus 24 Contour: "This data represents significant improvements over previous results and is very encouraging for present and future cochlear implant patients" says Sean McMenomey, M.D., FACS, medical director of the cochlear implant center at Oregon Health Sciences University. "It seems like the results we see with the Contour are better and quicker then with previous implants" says G. Walter McReynolds, M.D. of the Houston Ear Research Foundation. Nucleus 24 Contour Adult Six Month Performance Results: § Mean CUNY sentence recognition scores for the group are 90% § Mean CUNY in noise scores are 78.5% § Mean HINT sentence scores are 80% § Mean CNC word scores for the group are 47% The Nucleus® 24 Contour™ is approved for use in infants as young as 12 months of age and individuals with more residual hearing, allowing a larger population of patients to benefit from this technology.
