DENVER - December 11, 2001 - For the first time, Cochlear Corporation,
manufacturer of the Nucleus® cochlear implant systems, exhibited in the
technology category at Deaf Expo 2001, the nation's largest consumer trade
show for deaf and hearing impaired individuals, held in Pomona, Calif.,
November 16-17. Cochlear representative, Chris Writer, facilitated a panel
discussion with Nucleus cochlear implant recipients and gave a
presentation on innovations in Nucleus cochlear implant technology.
Cochlear is pleased to have taken a leadership role in this important
meeting for the deaf community," said Chris Writer, consumer marketing
manager, Cochlear Corporation. "According to the Deafness Research
Foundation, there are 500,000 to 720,000 individuals worldwide that could
benefit from a cochlear implant, yet fewer than 10% of those eligible have
taken advantage of the technology. The attendees were very excited to
receive information about this technology and to hear personal experiences
of recipients."
Approximately 4,000 deaf and hard of hearing individuals attended this
year's Expo. Each discussion held by Cochlear Corporation was met with a
large attendance, resulting in standing room only. Topics of the panel
discussion included candidacy, the decision to be implanted, reasons for
choosing the Nucleus cochlear implant, surgery, and the recipients'
experiences with the device and the effect the implant has had on their
lives. The presentation on innovations in cochlear implant technology,
which highlighted expanded candidacy criteria, was met with a great deal
of interest, prompting questions from both deaf and hearing individuals.
