Winners have been announced in the 2009 National Science Fair for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students held at Rochester Institute of Technology/ National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT/NTID.)

Nearly 50 contestants from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin brought their exhibits to Rochester, N.Y. during the competition, held March 20-22, 2009.

“It was an exciting weekend competition, with many interesting and rewarding opportunities for our deaf and hard-of-hearing scientists to showcase their top-notch science projects,” says Debbye Byrne, the Science Fair coordinator and assistant director for NTID’s Pre-College Outreach. “The quality of projects would have impressed Einstein. He’d wish they were his colleagues.”

The goal of the Science Fair is to promote interest in technology, science, engineering and math among 6th through 12th graders with hearing loss.

First, second and third places were awarded to middle school students, high school students and in the team division. First prize in each division was awarded $500; second-place winners received $300 and third-place winners received $200. Each winner also received a plaque.

The winners are:

Middle School Individual Division

1st place: Naima Boudeaux, from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia, for “Global Warming.”

2nd place: Joey Fazzone, from Farnsworth Middle School, in Guilderland, N.Y. for “Behavior of Earth Worms.”

3rd place: Corissa Hill, from Onteora Middle School, Boiceville, N.Y. for “Melting Rate of Ice.”

Middle School Team Division

1st place: Tres Diaz, Parker Holt and Isicc Prettypaint, from the Jean Massieu School for the Deaf, Salt Lake City, Utah, for “Signing and Driving.”

2nd place: Hope Basile and Sarah Stanislow from the Barker Road Middle School, Pittsford, N.Y., for “Solvents and Stains.”

3rd place: Angel Martan and Juliana Apfel, from the Arizona School for the Deaf, in Tucson, for “Making Soap Bubbles.”

High School Individual Division

1st place: Kayla Miller, from the Scranton (Pa.) State School for the Deaf, for “Effect from Car Exhaust.”

2nd place: Eric Scaraglino, from New Roads High School, Santa Monica, Calif., for “Light Affect the Growth of Plants.”

3rd place: Victoria Rainey, from Illinois School for the Deaf, in Jacksonville, for “Second Hand Smokers.”

High School Team Division

1st place: Hiram Ramos and Randy Spann, Jr., from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia, for “How Brain Registers and Reacts with Age.”

2nd place: Zobia Malik and Jordan Sanjaya, from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia, for “Soil Effect on Growth of Plants.”

3rd place: Lauren Goforth, Stellena Hargrove and Rachel Hutchinson from the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, for “Strength of Volleyball.”

This was the fourth year for the Science Fair. Plans are underway for the 2010 National Science Fair. Details will be posted on the Science Fair Web site.
