1st Place in Better Speech and Hearing Video Contest – That’s Just the Way We Hear

Submitted by Paula Rosenthal on April 11, 2009 – 3:59 pm49 Comments

_DSC1324.tifHere’s a captioned music video my daughter, Julie, did with her cousins for ASHA’s Better Speech and Hearing Month video contest. They won first place! Julie is deaf with two cochlear implants, just like me. As you can see, her early years at the Moog Center for Deaf Education learning to talk have paid off. My niece, Mel Paticoff, was the videographer and producer. She also wrote the lyrics for “That’s Just the Way We Hear,” which is sung to the tune of the Jonas Brothers’s song, “That’s Just the Way We Roll.”

Mel is in college, studying to become a teacher of the deaf and works with deaf children. She is also the leader of HearingExchange Teens at Facebook, a group for deaf and hard of hearing teens and young adults as well as their friends. Dani Paticoff is musically gifted, she sings and plays both piano and guitar. Dani and Mel helped Julie grow up loving music by making up songs, dances and shows since they were little girls.

The video was captioned using Overstream’s technology. I’d love to “hear” your comments. Please leave them in the Comments section below. Links to all the organizations mentioned here are below the video.

    Where’s the captions?

  • Michelle says:

I loved it! I can’t wait till my guy is old enough to do something like that. You have a beautiful daughter.

  • For captions, click on the arrow in the lower right corner and click on CC. The captions should appear.

  • Thank you, Michelle! Julie really loves to perform. She took an improv acting class until recently and aspires to be an actress!

  • Linda says:

Paula…thanks for sharing this. What a delightful and talented young lady Julie is! The title, “The New Face of Deaf Children,” says it all. I just retired from teaching Deaf children so most of my years were in the days before CIs. I did have one CI student from time of implant at age 5 which was late but even then it was so exciting to see the relative ease with which she picked up spoken language compared to the kiddies who got so little from hearing aids in earlier times.

  • Rick Sinclair says:

What an engaging and upbeat video! These two charming ladies would be an asset to know, hearing impairment or not. Julie, your mom posted the link to bhNews which is how your video reached all the way to Canada.

    I loved it! Thank you!

  • Linda, thank you for your comments. Julie learned most of her spoken language BEFORE she was implanted. The Moog Center’s program is so well put together and fun that the kids don’t realize how intensive it is. Many key lessons are taught 2 to 1 with a teacher of the deaf on a daily basis but is mixed in with sessions of 5 to 1 and also 12 to 2 with a general ed teacher daily. Many schools now use their model around the country.

  • Rick, thanks for your kind comments! Julie, Dani and Mel (the creator, videographer and producer who is not shown on camera) are all great young women! Please feel free to pass the video on to others, I think it is an inspirational message for children and adults. :)

  • Dale Sindell says:

Hola from Spain! Loved your great smiles and what you are doing! Very creative. You should be proud of yourselves. If I hadn’t been a huge fan of Hearing Exchange for years, I would never have thought you were deaf, you look and sound like normal hearing kids. My son and I both wear hearing aids. If you want to put your video on a link to my website in Spain, http://www.t-oigo.com, write me a mail through the site, and a litte introduction, and I will do so.

Best of luck to you. Congratulations for what you are doing on the website, truly inspiring and informative. Thanks for all you do.

    Dale

  • Hi Dale,

Great to “hear” from you, it’s been a long time! Only Julie has hearing loss in the video. The rest are her cousins and brothers who all have normal hearing.

We’d love to have you link it on your site. I’ll email you there soon.

    Best regards always,

    Paula

  • Debbie Spector says:

Very impressive. I will forward it along to some of my colleagues and speech and hearing students. See you, soon.
    Love,
    Debbie

  • Leah Lefler says:

What a cool video! They did a really good job on that. Julie really speaks for the Moog curriculum (no pun intended). We pop up to the Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center’s school on occasion for their parent/infant program. It sure makes me wish we lived closer to take advantage of their preschool!

  • Lois Burn says:

Loved the video, Julie. What a great message it gives to young adults. Be yourself!!!! You are definitely one of a kind. The video is also enlightening to those who are not knowledgable about cochlear implants. Great job, Jason and Daniel, too.

  • Thanks, Lois! I’ve got to get Julie to read all of these comments herself so she can enjoy them fully! Great seeing you today.

  • Part of these preparations is to release the new celtic fc shop for the new season with most of the chelsea away jersey having now released the latest designs and what is surprising is that Umbro produces the Premiership shirts for more teams than any other manufacturer, in fact they chelsea apparel from the same number of Premiership teams as Nike and Adidas combined.
