I went on vacation with my family and when we returned, we decided to go ahead with cochlear implant surgery for our 6 year old, hearing impaired daughter. This was something we have been looking into for quite some time. I've taken some much needed time off from some of my responsibilities at HearingExchange in order to tend to the needs of my daughter and son. I'm happy to report that she is recovering nicely and is anxiously looking forward to her implant activation next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. She received the Nucleus 24 cochlear implant. If you would like to read the news release about it, visit this page: http://www.hearingexchange.com/press/press-050502.htm For more information, be sure to read my latest entry in my Hearing Loss Journal, excerpted later on in this newsletter. Thank you for the many emails of well wishes I received. They truly warmed my heart. I will be printing them out for a scrapbook for my daughter so that she can appreciate them as well when she is older. Have a good week, Paula PS: Are you going to the Alexander Graham Bell Convention? Read more below about it.) If you are, be sure to drop me an email and I'll send you a FREE HearingExchange Member button! It will be a great way for us to easily identify members of our terrific online community. Simply send your name and mailing address to mailto:members@hearingexchange.com. It will be fun to finally meet some of the faces behind the words in our chats and message boards. :) = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = " " " " " " " " " " W H A T ' S N E W " " " " " " " " " " *** UPCOMING WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS *** The Moog Center for Deaf Education Presents, "Helping Your Child Learn to Talk" A Workshop for Parents of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children ages 2 to 6 Wednesday, July 17, 2002 beginning at 6pm through Sunday July 21, ending at 1pm 12300 South Forty Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141 Phone 314.692.7172 Join them for a four-day workshop where you will learn effective ways to work with your child and help your child learn to talk. Bring your child and make this a Family Affair. Classes will be provided for children 2 to 6 years and evaluation of speech and language will be provided for children 3 years and up, for an additional fee. The following topics will be discussed: - hearing loss and its impact on learning spoken language - understanding language learning in young children - turning everyday activities into language learning experiences - managing your child so your child does not manage you - mainstreaming your child in playgroups and community activities Enrollment is limited so that there will be plenty of opportunity for interaction and hands-on experiences. At $50, their 4 day workshop is a real steal. It has been subsidized by a private foundation so that it is feasible for families to make the trip to St. Louis. My daughter attends the Moog Center for Deaf Education so I know first-hand how terrific their workshops and staff are. People come from all over the U.S. so their children can attend their program. If you would like to read more about them, visit their site at: http://www.oraldeafed.org/schools/moog/index.html If you're going to the AG Bell convention, you can meet staff members of Moog there as well. More information will be coming soon. FAAA - Audiology Expert "I have moderate sloping hearing loss and for the past several months have been trying to find a Completely-in-the- Canal (CIC) hearing aid that works for me. My audiologist, a really nice and patient person who received her AuD. two years ago, has made several molds for me so far. But each resulting shell has had too much movement, particularly in my right ear." The mainstreamed implanted children who I serve are missing so much classroom information when presented auditorily only. My experience tells me that their language (and speech) would only be enhanced by adding sign language. And yet I hear that implanted children should NOT use sign language. Is there any actual RESEARCH to support or refute the use of sign language with cochlear implants for academic learning? I ask this fully knowing that auditory and speech training should continue to be a primary focus." Before that, I had only had the ringing noise maybe once a month. The pitch ranges anywhere from high to low and usually lasts 10-30 seconds. I don't swim or listen to loud music or anything of that sort. Can you help me determine what this is and possible treatment? I also have trouble hearing what people are saying. I went in for a hearing check and it was fine. I can hear the pitches, but when people are talking it sometimes sounds like they are mumbling."
