Best, Paula Rosenthal, J.D. - Publisher and Speaker HearingExchange www.HearingExchange.com Blog and Resources for People with Hearing Loss, Families and Professionals since 2000 Calling all Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teens ---------------------------------------------------------- Is your teen looking to connect with other kids with hearing loss? HearingExchange has just introduced a new forum just for them. Hosted at Facebook, HearingExchange Teens, is the place for teenagers in high school and college who are looking to meet similar aged kids to share their opinions, ask questions, and network with one another about issues related to hearing loss. In less than a week we have 30 members and counting to the HearingExchange Teens group. This group is open to both teens with hearing loss and also their friends. The group is moderated by Mel Paticoff, a high school senior planning to major in deaf education when she goes to college next year. Mel's aunt (me) and her cousin both have hearing loss which has inspired her choice of career. Mel has attended AG Bell conventions and has worked with young children with hearing loss, teaching them how to talk. HearingExchange Teens is an exciting new networking community. Be sure to let your teenager know about it! (Please note: Teens need to register for a Facebook account before they can join the network.) DeafAttorneys.com is a great resource for you. I also found an association for people with hearing loss in a variety of medical careers. If you fit these categories, check out these interesting groups. I researched it for the HearingExchange blog though and came away with a new appreciation for the kindness of people. Dr. Phil and several other individuals and companies offered all kinds of support and resources for this family. I was so moved that I made my own donation to assist them. I hope you will too. While the study itself may be able to back up the claims made in the abstract, I was shocked that so many news venues reprinted the abstract without further details. The way the abstract is written, it unduly scares parents of kids with hearing loss about their risks of contracting meningitis. It encourages families to have their children vaccinated against the disease. Links to the abstract and the Centers for Disease Control's previous studies and current vaccination recommendations are all available in my post. I personally use the Dry & Store daily for both mine and my daughter's hearing aid and cochlear implant processors. This device is a lifesaver if you or your child are active and/or live in a humid climate. This device is especially useful during the warm spring and summer months ahead. Betsy Moog Brook's book, "My Baby and Me" is an incredible resource for both parents and teachers of babies and children who are learning to talk. Clear, organized and full of great information, this book has received rave reviews from parents and professionals alike. I purchased this book as a gift for my daughter's speech language pathologist. She uses it when planning therapy sessions for her young clients with hearing aids and cochlear implants. "My Baby and Me" is also used around the country for counseling parents on working with their deaf or hard of hearing child. It's been on my mind for years, but I've finally decided to undergo bilateral cochlear implantion. My right ear was done in July 2002 and it's been an incredible journey. I hear so much better than I had with hearing aids for many years. But now my left ear is so poor that it is actually interfering with my hearing discrimination with my cochlear implant. Thus, I'm having my second cochlear implant surgery on May 16th in New York!
