HEARINGEXCHANGE WEB SITE FOUNDER
RECEIVES NUCLEUS® 24 CONTOUR™ COCHLEAR IMPLANT

Hearing Impaired Parent Receives Device to Boost Hearing
Less than Three Months After Daughter Received Hers

Jericho, New York (August 12, 2002) - Joining the ranks of deaf and hard of hearing celebrities Rush Limbaugh and newly implanted former Miss America Heather Whitestone as well as her own daughter, HearingExchange.com web site publisher Paula Rosenthal had her Nucleus 24® Contour™ cochlear implant activated last week. The device has proven to help many people with hearing loss gain access to sounds and language when hearing aids may not. Noel L. Cohen, M.D. of NYU Medical Center performed the surgery on July 18th and Annemarie Cicci, M.S. an audiologist at the NYU Cochlear Implant Center performed the device activation. The cochlear implant consists of an internal device that delivers signals to the auditory nerve and an external speech processor, microphone and transmitter.

"I waited four years to have this surgery so this is a very exciting time for me," said Paula. "It will take a lot of hard work and auditory training, but I'm determined to make a success of it. Hearing had become difficult and my quality of life had changed considerably in the past ten years." Previously enjoyable activities such as using the telephone, going to movies and attending theater performances had become increasingly frustrating for her. Working with her cochlear implant center to fine-tune the speech processor and practicing listening skills with a speech language pathologist, Paula hopes to regain the ability to easily hear her children, make telephone calls, and participate fully in the many social activities she and her husband enjoy.

Paula's cochlear implant surgery came on the heels of her 6 year old daughter's implantation of the same device in April. The decision to proceed with the surgery for both her and her daughter came after considerable research, consultations with medical professionals and deaf educators and observing the language and academic achievements of deaf children with cochlear implants at the Moog Center for Deaf Education. Cochlear implant surgery costs between $40,000 and $50,000 and is often done as same day surgery or may require an overnight hospital stay. Children as young as 12 months of age with severe or worse hearing loss may qualify for the procedure.
