Hello all,

Looks like my hearing on the right side is getting worse and I was told by my specilist in philly that I'm a candidate for a CI. The part that scares me is that I'm already deaf on the left side and doctor at this point told me my chances with CI would be better on the right then the left. I don't know what I'm going to get out of CI, thats the part that scares me. I read so many wonderful stories about CI. That I hope I can write a wonderful story about mine.

I like to hear some stories about CI's users, good or bad ones. Maybe this will help me here.

Thanks...Mark

I'm just wondering why would they use your better ear for the implant. My doctor said we'll use your worst so if there is any problem you'll still have your better hearing ear to fall back to.
When they put the implant in , it deafens that ear, so why not use the one that's already deaf. Unless there is scaring or some other problem.

Tweety-
If a person has been deaf in one ear for a long period of time and that ear has not been aided (ie. receiving auditory stimulation) then the auditory nerve on that side can atrophy due to "lack of use" so to speak.

Thus persons considering CIs need to think about choosing an ear that has still been receving stimulation.

A person who has been wearing aids in both ears so that both have been stimulated can choose more easily between which ear to implant. Your reasoning is often used in that case to determine the ear to implant.

Tweety,

I can agree with Trish on that point. I was told the same thing prior to my daughter being implanted that if she went for any long length of time with no stimulation that the nerve would cease to cooperate even with a CI.
