Where do you find deaf or hard of hearing people in your area? I get emails all the time of people looking for friends like themselves. Post your state and local organization or group for deaf and/or HOH people. Online friendships can be great, but it's nice to go out for coffee with friends too! :-)

Hi Paula! I'm a 43 year old teacher living in Los Angeles, California and have lost some of my hearing since I was about 38. Now have 2 hearing aids, that I had to become accustomed to for a year now. It took a while to get used to them. Advantages: I can hear speech much better with them! Unfortunately if one or both break down (get dirty inside or clogged up, or have moisture inside) then I am at a loss. People need to be more sensitive to persons who have a hearing loss. I do not read lips, and if one of my hearing aids is failing, I have much more difficulty understanding people. I don't want people to think I am being mean or snobby if I do not answer when they are talking to me (I may not have heard). Anyway, I am looking for a site to meet people with hearing disabilities and also would like to find a place to learn lip reading in the L.A. area. Nice to meet you!

Hi Sue,
My daughter knows where your coming from. She asked me one time do they make a t shirt that reads ... I am hearing impaired.... I wish people in this world would be a little nicer and understanding of peoples need. I have spoke up for my child may times and I am teaching her how to do it. I just look at them and say can you slow down & tone down your speech my daughter is having a hard time understanding you. My daughter taught herself how to lip read, she said i watch everyones mouth move and their actions when they talk. After enough time of doing that her ENT calls her the master of it.
Good luck

I am a teacher in Michigan City and I would like to know where some people hang out so I could get the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students of mine involved in some Deaf Community Activities. I think it would be a wonderful experience for the kids and me too!

Hi, I live in Ontario and I am also looking to find ways to become more involved in the Deaf culture and put my ASL courses to good use. I have an aunt and several cousins that know ASL but my aunt and uncle moved away in January and I don't really see those particular cousins more than a few times a year. If anyone knows of any ASL clubs or ways to volunteer I would appreciate any suggestions. I have been taking ASL classes for 6 months so my signing is not great but it is a start. The only way to improve it is with practice. Right?
