Please give advice. 4 1/2 yr. boy who's suddenly interested in a cool appearance visited cool older cousin in 'burbs (Chase is rural)and played with all the cool older kids. Claims to have lost both aids but not very concerned over the loss. Severe loss, aided three yrs. You who have been through this, please suggest best how to handle. Concerned he'll get new aids and "lose" them too.

Wow! This has never happened with my 5 year old, but I know she'll be concerned about her appearance when she is mainstreamed. Do you know about "cool" colored earmolds and cool colored hearing aids cases? Your audiologist can show you samples. Several children at my daughter's school have them and they really are more fun than the natural colored molds and hearing aids that were all that were available when I was a child.

You may want to look into insurance as well. Ask your audiologist/hearing aid dispenser about it. There are also two companies listed in our Resource Directory at http://www.hearingexchange.com/resources/Insurance/.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Thanks Paula; Yes, blue-green molds. yes, insurance (wouldn't leave home without it ). After 2 days he missed not hearing and was glad to get one loaner. 2 weeks of no cartoons devastated him (fortunately) and is used to deter future "losses". PS: after 2 weeks, one was recovered by neighbor mowing lawn. Bright side:neighbor mom confessed sons hearing loss and need for aids. our loss brought enlightenment to a child's family who has been getting by with lip reading.

That is great news! I'm still surprised everytime I meet people who are in denial about their child's hearing loss. It is one thing to feel it initially, it is another to continue to the child's detriment!

So glad your son realized the value of his aids.
