School is nearly over and my thoughts are quickly turning to summer camp for my children. My hearing impaired daughter will be going to a "mainstream" camp. A teacher of the deaf will visit the camp a few hours each week to provide inservice to the staff and to help my daughter with her social skills.

If you're a parent of a deaf or hard of hearing child, what will your child be doing this summer? Will your child receive any services? Tell us about it here.

We're borrowing an auditory trainer from the Bd. of Ed. to use for the summer. Chase also has summer school (july - half days) at Memphis Oral School for the Deaf. He is almost 5 and enjoys doing homework, so I have those books with tear-outs (got at Wal-mart). They're great to pull out when trying to fix dinner or other chore and he's bored.

My daughter has attended 2 basketball camps, one in our home town, the other in a nearby collage town. It was interesting watching her interact with the little girls that rode there and back with us. At one point one of her friends became frustrated with her because she could not understand something she whispered to her. She said, "Oooohhh! You can't hear anything!" Later, I told the friend to look at Rachel in the face and just lip sync what she wanted to say. She did and Rachel understood her. It became a game to see what they could lipread! They ended up saying Rachel was 'amazing' with her lipreading! One of our summer goals is to have more social interaction with her peers.

Summer is here for my son. I have enrolled him in a sign language class at Middlesex college. He seems very happy about this. He is profoundly deaf and attends public school. He uses an fm system as well as his aids in school. The school has refused to let us use the system at home for homework of during the summer for summer clubs or classes. We are looking to form a group of children both hard of hearing and hearing that would be interested in learning more about each other. I know my son would love to meet other children like his-self as well has teach children that he is just like ALL other children. He is ten years old. We live in Edison, NJ. IF anyone would be interested in forming a play group with us please contact us at cardmas@aol.com
