I have just returned from Maryland where the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing hosted its summer conference. I spoke to a group of parents and professionals about transitions and decisions when parenting a child with hearing loss. It is great to meet other parents and hear about their experiences. Are you in the midst of making decisions about your child's education or therapy? Tell us about it here. IP: Logged |

HI...we are in the process of getting a cochlear implant for our son, who has auditory neuropathy. He is now 15 months old. It is something we have been working on for a long time. We go for some of the pre-evaluation testing this week. Even though I know it is what we want and what we think is best for him, it is still a hard decision. WE will do it, but it is frightening to think of the surgery! WE will then have to start thinking about auditory/verbal therapy. I would still like to sign with him though! I may let him take the lead and see how it goes. It has been harder on my husband. I have been teaching deaf children for 10 years and this decision has not been a hard one for me, but that doesn't mean I am not nervous about it. I have to remember to stop and really explain things to him that I already know about. IT has been interesting though. I do keep those professionals on their toes! We are hoping he has the surgery by September! IP: Logged |
