I am new here. My son is three years old and was diagnosed deaf at 11 months of age. He just started preschool, and his teachers asked his father and I to start accessing the deaf community. I really don't know what that involves, but this looked like a good place to start. Tyler, is also autistic, and has been working through developmental delays. He is comming along quickly, and we will begin teaching him sign language this year. This seems hard for me, because I,m not catching on to signing easily. On top of that, Tyler makes very little eye contact and i just don't know how to start teaching him sign. If anyone has any suggestions i would be delighted to here them. Also, I'm looking for other good sights to visit to learn about the deaf community. Any help much appreciated. You can reach me at dannireed21@hotmail.com THANKS!!!!! IP: Logged |

Danni- Welcome to the site! I would just like to put in my two cents. I'm a 17 year old deaf girl. I've been deaf since birth, and I think I was diagnosed at 6 weeks (or 6 months, not sure)... and I would just like to say I am oral (I'm just now trying to learn ASL though!), so I was just wondering if you have tried the oral method with Tyler? Have you tried different methods to see what works? Are there any professionals nearby that may be able to help you with teaching Tyler communication methods? I'm not really in touch with the deaf community since I've been mainstreamed my entire life and my parents are both hearing so I've been with the hearing world. I'm trying to get in touch with the deaf community now, because being a deaf individual myself, I'm very interested in it! I don't know many deaf websites, so I'm not sure how to put you on the right track there, but the people who post in these forums seem very helpful and positive, so someone just might come along and give you some more advice. Best of luck to you and Tyler Take care, IP: Logged |

I would like to say that it's your choise how you raise Tyler. I know some people tell parents of deaf children to join the deaf community. But it's your choise how you want Tyler to grow up. I was raised oral all my life and learned sign language later because I got an interpreter later in junior high. Now I try not to use her much since my cochlear implant. There is a good site for you that has all info. It's not only about the deaf community but about everything you should know. If you click on webmap it will have a list of specific topics you want to know. Hope this helps! Hope this helps. IP: Logged |
