My daughter Ashley has bilateral sensorinueral hearing loss, she is 15 months old. This is a new subject for my husband and I. We are open to any suggestions. Ashley just got hearing aids and we cannot get her wear them. She has been through alot lately. We have had her hearing aids 5 days now and she has also had blood tests, urine tests, CT- scan, and an EKG done this week. I hate traumatizing her even more. The hearing aids seem to scare her. I need advice on anything you can give me. I also work full-time so things ar very stressful. My husband and I are open to any advice that can help 2 people who have never dealt with this subject. THANKS

Hi Shaleen:

Welcome to HearingExchange! I think you'll find a lot of support and information here. For starters, go to "Hop to" box at the bottom of this page and click on "Newly Diagnosed Child Resources." The message thread there lists many great places to learn more about the new (to you) world of hearing loss.

I and many others here know what an overwhelming time this is for you. Feelings of anger, denial, frustration, guilt and more are all entirely normal. The good news is that in today's world, there are many options for children with hearing loss as well as terrific technology in hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Has she had an audiogram done yet? What is her hearing loss like? Has she been aided yet? Children as young as 4 weeks can be fitted for hearing aids. It is important to give your daughter access to sounds as quickly as possible to stem any further possible speech and language delays.

Ask as many questions as you like, we're all here to help. Also, be sure to register for HearingExchange News and our Chat Updates on the main page of HearingExchange. You'll be kept up to date on all the latest news and information.

Warmly,

Paula

Some children adapt to wearing the aids quickly, while others don't. When my daughter first got hers at nearly 24 months, I was told to put them in for a little while and if she pulled them out, to leave them out for a little while and then try again later. Eventually, children figure out that the world is more interesting when they can hear the music from their toys, your voice, their babbling, etc.

There are some resources for keeping aids in that you may want to check out. Visit this link: www.listen-up.org/aids-out.htm

You may also want to get hearing aids for her doll(s) so that it won't seem so strange to her. Visit this link: www.listen-up.org/dolls.htm

Shaleen,

My son Nick wore aids at 4 months, but when he got to be about 18 months he found he could take them out. He did this for about a year, until he realized that wearing them made things better.

You may want to look into early intervention in your state. Programs for children under 3 yrs old can be a big help. Nick was in speech at 18 months; He learned signs which reduced the frustration of communication and helped his speech develope.

Kids at Ashleys young age bounce back from a week or two of tests better than a 4 or 5 yr old. Give her a few days.

God Bless,
Ronnie, Nick's mom

Hi, I agree with Nick's Mom.
I know how frustrating it is to keep hearing aids in. My daughter is now 11yrs.
We used critter clips. They are cute little animals that clip from the childs shirt to the BTE(Behind The Ear) aid.
You can call 1-800-726-0851 (ADCO)
They will send you a catalog free of charge.
Also contact your local school district, they may have some sort of program in place for deaf or HOH children under 3yrs.
I know they do here in CO.

Hi

I am new to hearing exchange... First, so you know who I am: I am a 23yr old graduate student with a moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. I have lived in 4 different countries and I speak the language (fluently) of each country. Having said all that, until I was 13 yrs old I lived in Brazil and every day my mother had to chase me around the house to put on the hearing aids. When we moved to United States, we discovered that I never wore the hearing aids in Brazil because they didn't help enough. How do I know that? Because at 13 I fell in love with hearing aids and now I proudly wear them everywhere I go.

But since I pretty much did not wear hearing aids for 13 years, how did I learn to communicate so well? I have had speech therapy from a very early age - my speech therapy taught me wonderful speech reading skills and (basically) taught me how to speak as well.

In short, I agree with the other parents, early start on speech is a must and over time Ashley will want to wear the hearing aids.

Hi Shaleen -- I'm into my second month of HAs on a 22 month old. You might check to make sure that the ear mold fits well. It took us about two weeks to get a good ear mold fit. With the decreased whistle/whine, my son could tolerate the aids longer.

I have also decided not to try while in the car for more than an hour. They inevitably come out during a long car ride, and then I'm hunting through the car, and carseat looking for piece parts!

Hi Shaleen,
I know what you are going through! Our 15-month-old daughter just got hearing aids about 2 months ago. At first, she seemed frightened by the sounds she could hear with them on. She very quickly became more relaxed with them and within a week or two was happily yanking them out of her ears multiple times every day!
It took a good month to get that out of her system. We just kept putting them back in and trying to interest her in anything involving sound- music, instruments, singing, poems, fire trucks, etc.
Getting new ear molds helped some. But, I think more than anything, she just had to be a toddler and explore the hearing aids and do a lot of experimenting with taking them off the way a toddler may like to dump all the crayons out of a crayon box or splash water in the bathtub to see the effect.
By the way, some parents like to try the cute critter holders to keep the aids from getting lost when she pulls them out. However, you mentioned that you work full-time. If your child is in a care situation with other children her age (or close), you my not want the critter holders. They are so cute, they make a lot of other toddlers want to yank on them!
