My son is 12 and has had CAD from the age of 6 months. He has had an IEP since 2nd grade. That is when he was diagnosed. Now he has advance to 50% in noise.

I have a re-eval coming up this month and the school is starting to look at mike as a behavior problem again (that is how he got into special ed). I have explained to them that the behavior only starts when he is not hearing what is going on in the class room. They dont want to hear it and are requesting a re-eval for behavior again.

Does anyone know what I can do to make them work with him and his hearing? He is a B student and a real sweet heart. The most he does in class is talk back to teachers when they are not listening to what is going on with him. i.e he asks a second time for instruction on a topic.

Does anyone know what my son is required to have as far as help in the class room?

He told me this week that he does not want to be in mainstream next year. He wants to go back to a special ed class room.

My son has given up on learing. I dont know what to do. I have called the school and spoke to them but I am not very confident that they will show any support.

If you have any ideas to help me feel free to email me. Roslyn34@aol.com

Hi,
In my daughters IEP we have put in writing for her to have a note taker in class sitting right beside her. The school sp. Ed dept. is to supply paper that has a copy under it, one for my daughter and one for the note taker so both children have a copy. she is mainstreamed from day 1 and is in 7th grade now. If she did not hear her teacher she looks at the note taker. Also her IEP has that the teacher must write all directions on the board for her, even homework.

Best of luck...

Roslyn, I just viewed the postings and haven't been to Hearing Exchange for a while. Glad I looked in. I saw your post about your son and wondered if CART services would be helpful. Depending on his reading level, which I'm sure is fine if he's a B student, he might be well served by a personal CART reporter in the classroom. This is readily accepted at colleges and universities but is not considered often at junior high and high school level, though it should be. There was a front page article in The Atlanta Constitution (I'll look it up if you want to see it) about a h.s. student receiving this service.

I'll be happy to tell you all about it but please visit my website for info about what it is, if you don't know already. It's really captioning, like on TV (which is done by court reporters) but CART is the personal service right in your classroom. I suppose a notetaker is an alternative but the CART reporter has the laptop right there for the student to view for instantaneous translation of what is being said and the student can take his own notes off it. I don't know what notetakers do when someone has a question. Look at their notes?

I am working hard to get this to be an accepted and requested service because it is so appreciated at colleges and in the workplace for deaf and hoh students and anyone requiring it for complete communication access. Let me know how else I can assist you. But initially refer to my site(s) for info about what it is.

Hi,
Also check out www.machineshorthand.com/CARTWheel.htm for a CART provider in your area. CART would be a wonderful option for your son. Our students not only get to view what is said instantly in the classroom via a laptop screen, but they also get a transcript printout of the class for their personal use. Carey
