mike read your story. I lost the hearing in my right ear in 1986. one minute I could hear the next I couldnt. Now the left ear is going from all the noise on that ear and it is doing all the work. I also get dizzy and feel like there is cotton in my ear. That buzzing is enough to drive a person insane at times. The dr,s up here in Canada say I have severe nerve damage from too much noise when i was younger. I went on the hearvest run in the U.S.A. for 3 yrs. so too much noise on the ears on the combines running up to 16hrs a day. the hearing loss is sure scary and I know how you felt. Hopefully someone will find a way to help people like you and me. hang in there. IP: Logged |

I'm new to this forum, and have a sudden interest in the subject. Listening today to the Rush Limbaugh show, he revealed that, at the age of 50, he has suffered near total hearing loss over the past few months. I feel devastated for him. At the same time, having this happen to such a high profile public figure (regardless of how you feel about his political views) can only help to increase awareness of sudden hearing loss and , hopefully, a much greater level of research into the causes and treatment of sudden hearing loss. I have a question for those of you who have suffered from sudden hearing loss. Were there any symptoms that preceded it? I am afraid that it may happen to me some day down the road. Let me describe my symptoms: I am 31. My hearing is fine right now. I do have a mild case of tinnitis, caused no doubt by a youth spent setting off firecrackers, shooting guns (target practice) without hearing protection, and attending loud concerts. For the past couple of years, I have occasionally felt a very sharp pain in my inner ear (particularly the left) when the outer ear is moved in a certain way (tugging on it, rolling over on my pillow). It only happens a few times a month, and the pain only lasts a second, then goes away. I'm afraid there is some type of problem developing, like a growing tumor or some other physical problem. The past few months, I've noticed a dull pain in my ears, slight headaches, and occasionally, very mild dizziness/nausea. Not enough to affect my balance or daily activities, but, having read the experiences on this board, I'm worried that I could wake up some morning with my hearing suddenly gone. I have an appointment with my GP in a few weeks to get things checked out, but would like any input from those of you who have "been there, done that." Thanks for any replies, and I wish everyone on this board all the best in your quest for answers. IP: Logged |

This may seem like a strange question. i feel strange asking it. But it's effecting me, so i wonder if anyone else has had this happen. With my deafness, I too get the ringing, buzzing and beeping of Tinitus. Luckily, it only flairs up from time to time. Usually when i'm trying to get some sleep. Now here is the part that may sound funny, but it a real issue for me and I wonder how, or if it relates. I guess i wonder if this has anything to do with the tititus, if it's something common? Or could it be another issue caused by my loss of hearing. If it has nothing to do with the tinitus situation, do you think it might be another mental issue or side effect from loosing hearing. I hope this come out right.. Ron Jaxon ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have had tinnitus for 10 years...and lots of childhood infections. No more infections but lots of scar tissue. My infections stopped suddenly when my step father started giving me chriopractic adjustments. Now you can roll your eyes all you want...all I know is that from day one, after the adjustment, I never had another painful ear-ache. ALso had very bad vertigo for 2 years starting at age 28. Went to doctor after doctor. No one could help. I found out from a trainer at my local gym...that I had exercise induced vertigo. When ever I would strain to lift heavy weight...it would make the vertigo worse. So I stopped and just did swimming or walking...and the vertigo went away. Tried going back to lifting weights and sure enough the vertigo came back. The doctors told me I had herpes in my inner ear...all wrong! (They seem to do a lot of guessing!) I have been vertigo free for 5 years now thanks to my trainer at the gym. I now take a steam to open up my ears and keep good draining...and try not to take medication. Also have started on a more natural approach to health with vitamins, chiropractic, etc and have found a decrease in my tinnitis. Am trying various natural approaches...I figure I can guess at my health just as well as the doctors can! And no medical side-effects! IP: Logged |

Marc, I'm really glad to hear that chiropractic worked for you. My dad is a chiropractor and has related many instances in which chiropractic treatment has helped people with hearing problems. There are even claims of restoration of hearing in people who are deaf. I'm a little skeptical of that, but, seeing all the posts regarding the failure of traditional medicine to provide much help, I can see how a visit to the chiropractor would be worth a try.
