Hi everyone, I am Pete, 56 yrs young, hearing loss of 70&50% and currently wearing aids. Does anyone at this forum have experience with learning to lip read? I have to work a number of years more and my hearing is not getting any better. I am now having cronic pain and swelling in my right ear canal and none of the doctors can figure out why. This condition comes and goes and some days I can wear the right aid, but others days it's too painful. I need some hearing help in the work place and thought that learning to lip read could be a benefit. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

Hi, Pete. I have absolutely no answers but am also interested in finding out about learning to read lips. I also have two aids and have been having a great deal of trouble with one ear because I seem to have an allergic reaction to the ear mold. I have had it remade numerous times without any luck, but I guess I'll just keep on trying. Hope your problem has gotten better.

Hi Janie, Paula Rosenthal at this site is looking for a copy of a book titled "I Can't Hear You in the Dark", it's in the library section at this site. It maybe out of print because I cannot find a copy at amazon or barnes and noble. My right ear is still giving me trouble, it looks like we have similar problems. I wish I had an answer. Thank you for the note if I get any information about that book I will pass it on. Pete

Hi Guys and Gals...

Good news! I contacted the author and you can buy the book from her directly by sending her a check and she said she'd get it right out to you. The only thing is, her information is on my computer in St. Louis and I'm in NY for the weekend. I promise I'll post the info on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Paula

Hi Paula, Thank you for the information about ordering the book , It is greatly appreciated. I have again spent my lunch hour reading through the various postings here and again have to thank you. So much of it is how I feel and how people react to me. I never realized so many of us have so much in common. Pete P.

Hi,
I took lipreading lessons from a state college from a student there who was going to school to be a speech therapist. She got some kind of credit for her class to work with me. I was referred there by the Dept of Vocational Rehab thru the state and they paid for the lessons. It was very helpful and even kind of fun but I have heard several times that a person can only pick up 30% of words thru lipreading alone. I think what I learned was very helpful, though. Good luck! Denise

30%? Not a chance! I have a profound loss in both ears and with just my hearing aids and without lipreading, I would get nothing, but with lipreading I pick up at least 75% or more of what is said. It has been a godsend to me.

I am 50 years young I have severe hearing loss and use bilateral hearing aids. I have taken classes and researched lip-reading and know that, in theory, only 30-40% of sounds can be seen on the lips (try looking in the mirror and say "Kennedy in Conneticut"...you won't see those sounds)...but I have had my hearing loss for at least 30 years, so I also know that the combination of lip reading, watching facial expressions, knowing the subject being discussed...we are pretty resourceful and can "hear" a lot more than that 30-40% theory suggests I also have learned some ASL...along with some of my family members without hearing loss. This has helped me a lot ..especially when my hearing aids are in the hearing aid hospital You don't need to know a lot of sign to assist communication... and it is really kind of fun to learn. Classes are available in Community Colleges now, because ASL qualifies as a second language for the kids (and adults) getting degrees.

Hope this helps...Taffie

There are several good videos on learning speech reading. "I see what you're saying" is just one. Check out your public library in the special needs section.
