HELLO...My name is Mary and I have been working with deaf students for 10 years. I have been teaching middle and high school age students. I teach in a public regional day school in TX. We use SEE2 in the classroom although I do try to add ASL features to my English signs.
I also have a 10 month old son who is deaf. he was born 8 weeks early. I wrote more about him on the parents page!

To those of you who are parents, please please please communicate with your child. Whatever method you decide upon stick with it and do it. Be it CUED speech, ASL, SEE2 or oralism. I read a great book...The Silent Garden...it is for parents. What I took away from it that really struck me was that deafness is not an issue of not being able to hear but of not being able to communicate!
Too many of my students have parents who just do not communicate well with them. Some parents expect the child to get it all at school and they do not have to put forth any effort at home. It shows up in the kids reading, writing, understanding of English, social skills, discipline ect.....
Those students who have parents who are involved do so much better.

It is very hard for me to separate my opinions as a teacher and my opinions as a parent.
I would love to chat with other parents as well as professionals.
I find that reading and grammar are the 2 hardest things for me to teach. Math is so concrete that it is not as difficult for me to teach my kids. I would love to exchange classroom ideas.

Hi Mary! I agree communicating with your child is so important in whatever mode you chose. Just communicate!!!! I am a preschool special needs teacher w/ two HOH children in my class. I am currently working on a Master's in Deaf Ed.
I am also a parent of a special needs child(L.D.) Although he does not have a hearing loss I can see both sides of the fence too because he struggles with written expression/reading which of course are forms of communication.
I have a forum for professionals that work w/ HOH kids if you e-mail me Mary privately.

Thanks,
Debbie
