I am a teacher with MANY years experience working with children with severe/multiple learning differences. I have always had a few students who are Deaf with additional disabilities in my class. This year my class was moved to an elementary school with a large Deaf Ed. Dept. All of my students are Deaf with a wide range of abilities. I am looking to connect with others working with similar children especially anyone working with children who are Deaf AND Autistic. If anyone is out there PLEASE contact me. -Holly IP: Logged |

Hi Holly: Welcome to the HearingExchange forums. I noted you are a sysop over at Compuserve. Tell us a little about you and what you do on and offline in the deaf/hoh community. I found an article for you online that contains various resources regarding children who are both deaf and autistic. You can read it here: BTW, please try not to post redundant messages in all the forums. Pick the forum you feel would be best. New messages are flagged every time someone comes back, so they're likely to read them all. Thank you for your cooperation. Let me know if this article helps you. I'll keep my eyes open for more. --Paula ------------------ [This message has been edited by Paula (edited 04-15-2001).] IP: Logged |

Sorry about the multiple posts I should have asked before submitting them. I will know better next time. -Holly What would you like to know about me? I am a teacher with 26+ years experience teaching in the public school system. For several years Deaf students with severe learning differences have been placed in my class along with hearing children with similar disabilites. This year the program was moved and all my students are Deaf. It is very difficult to find information on the interaction of Deafness and other learning conditions. I am the WizOP on the Compuserve Disabilities Forum. Unfortunately, participation on that forum has gone down drastically over the years so I have to look elsewhere on the net for information and support. I am glad I found these boards! -Holly IP: Logged |

Hi Holly! I would love to share ideas with you. I was looking for information on deafness and autism back in the fall w/ no luck!!! I am doing ABA consulting for a family with a child who has deafness and HOH. It is a challenge. I was told by our a regional admin that the sensory loss would be considered the primary disability and that the autism would be secondary. I am not sure I agree with that but that is what I was told. I have learned a lot from the child and how to combine my knowledge of autism with other challneges as HOH. I currently teach preschool special needs with 22 years of experience and am going back to work on a second master's in Deafness. Lets chat off forum. I also have a very active HOH forum for professionals I will send you an invite. I won't post it here without permission first. Thanks also Paula for the web site you gave Holly on deafness/autism. Debbie: Add your HOH forum for Professionals to our Resource Directory. We'd love to know about it and spread the word! You can do that here: www.hearingexchange.com/resources/add.cgi Please share your resources on deafness and autism with the forum - I'm sure there are many others who would like to have this information as well. I was amazed to see your post and that of others. I have worked with a deaf/autistic child for 2 years and have had no luck in finding anything on the web and only a few contacts. This kid puzzles the autistic teacher and myself everyday. She says he does not fit within the classis autistic spectrum and I have evidence that he hears more than originally thgouht. He has also just started medical treatment for ADHD and we have seen great changes. He just started with signs 2 years ago and has not progressed at the rate I would like, but he is using some signs and seems to be more attentive to my signs. He has minimal verbal skills. Basically his expressive language is at the infant to 1 year stage. WE are currently seeking a current audiogram that shows numbers, versus the audiologists impressions and a generic "probabaly has a severe hearing loss" statement. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I teach deaf and hoh preschoolers. I have one child in my class with mild to moderate autism and another that I suspect sometimes of PDD. What state are you in? IN NC we have TEACCH to help us with the autism. Email me at margaretflocklear@hotmail.com and I'll try to get some links for you to TEACCH. They are a wonderful resource. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi! I do ABA w/ a boy who has autism and HOH. I had said before he amazes and puzzles us each day and all of us have a hard figuring out which challenge is hurting the lang. more but I am suspecting the autism is. I wanted to key in on what the teacher from NC said. The TEACCH method is wonderful for children w/ autism. I went to a three day worskshop last year on it. I don't use everything but I use enough of it. Its worth looking into. Debbie C-M IP: Logged |

I just wanted to update everyone on the little guy(age 5) I am working w/ that is HOH/autistic. He is doing so well. He wear his hearing aids now. They had to overcome that behavior, so he will wear them all the time. He is beginning to play with other children and use spontanoues speech of 2 words. His hearing loss is mild to moderate so he was able to hear some sounds before the aids. It still is not real clear but he sure has come far on the ABA training. Debbie IP: Logged |
