Hello All, My name is Pat. I'm a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology. I am also a Licensed Counselor. I have a background and training in areas of Deafness pertaining to culture, mental health, & psychology. My special area of interest is in Late Deafness. For the past few years, I have counseled several women who are Late Deafened and I'm continuing to learn more about this area and planning to write my dissertation on how Late Deafness impacts identity and developmental issues in adulthood. I would enjoy communicating with anyone who would like to discuss more about this topic.ON a personal not, my father lost his hearing in his left ear during WWII and has some hearing ability in his right ear. So in some ways, I guess I have been involved in this field personally for a long time. For myself, I have been dealing with tinnitus for the past year and learning how to cope with it. I would allow be interested in communicating with others who are dealing with this situation. I am very pleased to have discovered the Hearing Exchange and I'm very excited about having the opportunity to learn and grow on both a personal and professional level. P.S. I'm technically (and artistically) illiterate. Can someone explain the message icons to me? Thanks, Pat ------------------ Pat

Hi Pat:Welcome to the forums! When you post a message or reply there is a link to this page: www.hearingexchange.com/ubb/smilies.html that explains how and what several other icons are. The link says "Smilies Legend." As for the general one that is up top when you are typing, top row, left to right: message, laughing, worried, friendly wink, disagree, agree, read this, second row: idea, caution, question, cool, happy, mad, sad. Have fun! Paula ------------------ Want the latest news and info on hearing loss? Send a blank message to HearingExchangeNews-subscribe@listbot. We respect your privacy.

Pat, The issues you're studying are those I live with daily. I've had a progressive hearing loss since childhood, which wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 30's. About 8 years ago, it dropped steeply overnight following a humble cold, and is now in the profound range. If my experiences can add to the knowledge base, I'd be happy to participate. You can contact me at spottedgecko@uswestmail.net. Diane

Hi Pat, I would be happy to participate in your quest to gather information with regard to hearing loss experienced beginning as an adult. My hearing loss began in my early twenties (I am now 59) and seems to very gradually get worse as times passes.I wear behind the ear hearing aids in both ears and depend very much on lip reading to help myself communicate as best I can. You may e-mail me at bnnavone@webtv.net.

Hello to all who have replied, Bear with me as I try to learn the computer technology to get messages across. I want to thank those of you that replied. I've sent an email to those that have listed an email address.Paula, maybe you can help me here. The people who have replied appear to be willing to answer some of my questions. Is it best to post my questions on this board? If people want to respond on the board they can, but if they want to respond personally to me by email is that OK too? For those that want to be on the board, can this also be an ongoing dialogue? I just want to make sure I'm following the proper protocol. If this is OK with all of you, once I hear back, I'd like to formulate some questions and just see where it goes from there. Thank you all again. Sincerely, Pat

Hi Pat:I think the best way to handle this is for you to start a new topic and post your questions in it. You should specify that you are gathering information that may be published and outline how you are going to handle the information and the identities of the people who respond. Give people a choice, on the message boards or via email directly to you. I'm sure we can all learn from the information you will receive. Dear Pat, Not only would I like to help with your research but I would be interested in reading your research. I have a hereditary progressive nerve deafness. Losing the ability to hear is difficult but the resulting mental "stuff" is challenging to say the least. debthompson@earthlink.net
