A Model of Auditory Learning: Games, Activities, Strategies, & Techniques
for Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Course Description: This interactive presentation will focus on a
detailed model of auditory development that serves as a tool for the
selection of teaching targets and monitoring progress. Strategies and
techniques that facilitate the development of spoken language by children,
who are deaf or hard of hearing, will be demonstrated in video excerpts. A
variety of practical therapy activities, games, and material will be
shared with participants.
About the speaker: Kathryn Wilson is a speech-language pathologist,
teacher of the deaf, and certified auditory verbal therapist with 27 years
of experience as an educator and therapist in public school, private
practice, home-based, and clinical settings. Wilson has provided
consultation and training to individuals, schools, and families on a
variety of topics related to auditory-verbal practice. She has supervised
students at the graduate level and serves as a mentor for professionals
pursuing certification in auditory verbal therapy. Wilson has presented at
numerous conferences and is co-chair of the AVI Professional Education
Committee. She is a former member of the board of directors for
Auditory-Verbal International, Inc. Currently, Wilson serves as director
of the Resource Support Program in the Office of Education Services for
the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Target Audience: Speech-language pathologists, audiologists,
educators of the deaf/hard of hearing, and parents of children who are
deaf/hard of hearing.
Program Objectives:
• Describe and identify strategies and techniques to promote the auditory
development of spoken language
• Discuss a detailed model of auditory learning and identify critical
steps in the hierarchy of auditory development
• Identify a variety of activities, games, and materials appropriate for
learners of various ages
